Some of Soccer’s best hairstyles

Footballers are known for their swag on and off the pitch. I’ll be examining some of my favorite hairstyles on footballers in the past and present.

proud Ginger, now ESPN commentator Alexi Lalas

First off this is ESPN soccer commentator and analyst Alexi Lalas who has made the transformation from ginger caveman to civilized human being. Lalas was a defender with the 1994 US World Cup team and was the first modern era, American born player to play in Italy’s Serie A. Thank goodness he retired this hairstyle which looks like a Neanderthal Ron Weasley.

This creature here is Liverpool striker Andy Carroll. Besides being known for the most expensive English footballer in history (£35 million transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool last January) and a thunderous left foot, Carroll now has this going for him. White boy cornrows to the fullest, he looks like he should be cast on Malibu’s Most Wanted. With only one goal this season, maybe Carroll should abandon his ponytail and bring back the braids.

Becks is the king of hair

David Beckham is one of the most talented players ever for England, and he’s also become a world-wide celebrity with his movie star good looks, his marriage to Posh Spice aka Victoria Beckham, the catch-phrase “Bend it Like Beckham” and of course his ever changing hair.

There are way too many pictures to post, but this is his attempt braids. Please look at this website though for more of Becks. I promise its worth your while.

16-year old Cesc Fabregas on Arsenal had a little flair

Current Barcelona midfielder and former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas is one of the most talented players in the world. When he cracked Arsenal’s starting lineup as a 16-year old he also had one of the best maintained mullets in the world. Business in the front, party in the back, this mullet exemplifies excellence.

Ronaldo's hair for the 2006 World Cup

Ronaldo used to be one of the greatest players in the world before he ate himself out of the sport. He now has a beer gut the size of a mini keg. However the Brazilian will never live this down — his 2006 World Cup hairdo. Words can’t explain what he or his barber was thinking when he ended up with this on his head.

Former Nigerian defender Taribo West used to rock these controversial ponytails. He looks like a raggedy Anne Doll except worse.

Landon Donovan's dark past

The United States’ all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan always hasn’t been the clean cut professional you see nowadays. Donovan’s dark secret is visible in this picture from an MLS all-star game. I used to rock the bleach in my hair back in the day so I understand the want and desire for it. Imagine if Donovan brought this hair back today, I wonder what his coach Jurgen Klinnsman would say?

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song is one of my favorite players to watch play. The 24 year old Cameroon international plays aggressive hard tackling football and is a constant presence in the Arsenal starting IX. A versatile player as well, the powerful Song has played on the back-line as well as in the midfield for injury depleted Arsenal.

During his playing career for the Gunners he has always had some rowdy hairdos. On the left is Song’s attempt at looking like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons, and he cleaned it up a bit for last season with the bleached afro. Keep in mind he later bleached his beard during last season, a move which I was highly in favor of. Now this season Song has decided to change it up again and rock a mohawk that is dyed red like a rooster.

Footballer’s are always known for their bravado and swag, and now one can see some of the hairstyles made popular by these athletes.
